Green Card vs. H-1B Visa Whatâs the Difference President Donald Trumpâs controversial immigration ban on refugees and travelers from seven predominately Muslim countries has caused widespread confusion and days of protests. On Sunday, the White House backtracked on a section of the order, saying that green-card holders would not be affected. Travelers with H1-B visas, however, are still in limbo. The ban hits several American companies that rely on skilled labor from foreign countries. Unsure of what all this means? Hereâs a quick explainer on the differences between the two programs, and what the ban means for their beneficiaries. Green Card Green-card holders are permanent U.S. residents who have obtained that status through a variety of means â" marriage, refugee status, lottery, etc. A U.S. resident isnât a U.S. citizen â" they have no voting rights and can be deported if found guilty of certain crimes or violations. Residents remain citizens of another country, and must carry the passport of that country as well as their green card if they travel outside the U.S. After a designated length of time (usually five years), permanent residents can apply for U.S. citizenship. The executive immigration ban does not apply to green-card holders, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security. The exception, as outlined by DHS Secretary John Kelly, is for cases âabsent the receipt of significant derogatory information indicating a serious threat to public safety and welfare, lawful permanent resident status will be a dispositive factor in our case-by-case determinations.â H-1B Visa A visa gives a person the right to travel to the U.S. for a âtemporary stay.â They come in a variety of forms (work visas, student visas, tourist visas) and expire after a certain period of time. H-1B visas are awarded to foreign workers who typically have at least a bachelorâs degree, 12 years of work experience, or a combination of the two. The visas are assigned through a lottery that employers â" not individuals â" apply for, and are tied to high-skilled positions like physicians, professors and engineers. Last year, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) received more than 236,000 H-1B petitions for 85,000 available visas. As of this writing, H-1B holders from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen are included in the Presidentâs ban. So if a temporary, skilled worker is a resident of one of those seven banned countries, he or she might not able to re-enter the U.S. until the 90-day ban is lifted. This also pertains to someone who is a resident of one of those countries and is in the middle of the hiring process â" they too will not be permitted entry into the U.S. Tech companies like Apple, Twitter and Microsoft, which use the H-1B program to fill various engineering and programming roles, have loudly denounced the policy. Some like Google have offered legal aid to employees affected by the ban. More than 100 Google staffers are affected by the order, Bloomberg reports.

Does Your Flaky Job History Matter To Recruiters - Work It Daily In a study released by Evolv, over 100,000 call center employees were asked about their employment history and their current tenure. The results could change how recruiters look at your rocky employment past. Recruiters try to screen out âjob hoppers;â that is, employees who seem to perpetually change jobs. For companies, this type of employee is very expensive, given the recruiting costs, training, and opportunity costs. Some say a job hopper who leaves before six months can cost an organization one and a half times the employeeâs annual salary. The assumption is that if your resume shows a long list of companies, with some jobs lasting six months or less, then you are a job hopper and will, therefore, leave all of your future jobs at the same frequency. Evolvâs study completely invalidates the flaky job history fallacy. Respondents were put into one of five categories when asked how many jobs theyâd had for less than six months â" job hopper behavior. Options were zero jobs held for less than six months, one job held for less than six month, all the way up to more than six jobs held for less than six months. Next, the study looked at the number of jobs each of these categories of employee had held in the last five years. Will the job hopper hold more jobs during the same time period than the non-job hopper? In other words, will job hopping behavior predict how long someone stays at a job? Most recruiters make this very assumption. However, the results show that non-job hoppers and job hoppers have held about the same number of jobs over the last five years, and, therefore, job hopping is not an accurate predictor of future job stability. In a chart, each color category of employee follows the same curve. This curve shows there is almost no difference in employment outcome among employees who have held short-term jobs in the past. In fact, the study found that there is just eleven daysâ difference between those who have never left a job before six months and those who have. So, recruiters who see a steady resume and assume the candidate will stay for a predictable length of time are statistically incorrect. Likewise, if you have had to leave a job before six months, or have held many jobs in the last five years, donât feel too bad. Your future jobs may fare much better for you. The challenge for you, if youâve been a job hopper, is convincing your interviewer that hiring you involves little risk. Heres why including these verbs gets your resume noticed by all the right higher-ups in an organization.1. BuiltThis verb was an extremely popular choice with the HR professionals I spoke to, including certified resume writer Kelly Donovan. The verbs you choose for your resume must be strong, according to Donovan.They bring your experience to life, engage your reader, and convey the leadership traits you want to be known for, Donovan said.Built is one such verb that does it all. Using it allows applican ts to talk about they have created or grown. This may include anything from building a division, new stream of revenue or a new program within their department or company.2. ChampionedDoesnt looking at this verb already make you feel invincible? This is another one of Donovans favorite verbs to include on a resume.Donovan loves it because it shows that the applicant strongly advocated for an idea, project, or program within your organization. And, like a true superhero, they were able to find success in doing so.Being able to sell concepts within a matrixed organization is a critical skill today, Donovan said. Leaders need to be able to get buy-in from their teams and pair it with a successful outcome.3. CollaboratedDebra Boggs, executive resume writer and co-founder of DS Professional Coaching, recommends using the verb collaborate on candidate resumes. Why? Boggs says that it shows you can work well with others. Its also a stronger verb to use than the standard worked with or comm unicated with often spotted on resumes.4. GeneratedAdrienne Tom, certified executive resume master at Career Impressions, advocates for using compelling verbs like generated on resumes. Tom notes that results speak louder than simply listing off bulleted tasks or duties.Employers read resumes to decipher Whats In It For Me (WIIFM) if they hire a candidate. Tom explained. They need proof of results to support the decision. Candidates that have held leadership positions should use a verb like generated in their resume to sto off valued-enhanced statements centered on big business wins.5. LedThis simple verb can be incredibly effective in conveying leadership through resumes, according to Donovan. Using led better highlights someone with leadership qualities than verbs like managed or directed.Donovans only major rule of thumb to follow? Use this verb in small doses.Led is a good verb to use as long as you dont use it too frequently, like having consecutive bullets or sentences that st art with led.6. OwnedSteph Cartwright, certified professional resume writer and founder of Off The Clock Resumes, is a big fan of dropping in the verb owned in resumes. Cartwright recommends using it to replace less impactful phrases like responsible instead, as it better demonstrates action and impact.7. SpearheadedAccording to Donovan, spearheaded has the best impact when it is used sparingly. No more than once or twice in a resume is effective due to the verbs dramatic nature.This verb conveys a sense of you leading the charge on an initiative, Donovan said. Using the verb spearheaded is a great way to take ownership of the success on initiatives you deserve most of the credit for.8. TransformedUnanimously, Boggs, Donovan and Tom all agreed that there is one must-include verb to show off your leadership skills in any resume. That verb is TransformedBoggs recommends using this word over a verb like improved to show the impact you had on an organization.For Donovan, everything arou nd this verb is an excellent conversation starter.Transformed is a great way to talk about how you successfully led positive change within a department, division or team.Dont Forget NumbersThis article may be about the value that leadership verbs bring to resumes, but remember that verbs are only one part of the equation. Donovan says the other part is about results achieved in past leadership roles.Whenever possible, quantify the results with a number, Donovan said. Even if some results cant be measured with numbers, you can still make it impressive by highlighting what had to be overcome to achieve it, or the benefit of the outcome you achieved.

The key thing for you to do is to show that through your social media postings and the message you send across in your employer brand.The best piece of advice I can give you by far is be authentic and be transparent.Millennials have a very good way of figuring out whether or not youre transparent.Obviously you want to be active on social media sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and things like that.Some recruiters are even doing cool things on other social media platforms like Snapchat and Periscope.Id also recommend looking into more niche websites depending on the type of profile youre looking for.So as an example, if youre looking for developers, you might want to check out websites like Stack Overflow and Github versus a traditional job board or LinkedIn because they might be spending more time there.Same for a marketing person. Maybe you want to go to a website like inbound.org or growthhackers.com.Wha ts important is when you go to these types of websites, you dont just post blindly Hey, were hiring. Come join our companyYou really want to build an authentic relationship with these people. So take your time to actively post in the community and respond to conversations.
